The Higher Education Disability Support Program (DSP) provides funding to eligible higher education providers, to assist with supporting students with disability to access, participate and succeed in higher education.

As part of the 2023-24 Budget, an additional $17.7 million will be provided under the DSP (from 2023-24 to 2026-27) to increase support for students with disability in higher education.

The DSP provides funding to eligible higher education providers, to assist with supporting students with disability to access, participate and succeed in higher education.

Funding is allocated by formula, based on enrolment numbers of domestic students with disability at a provider, and the total number of students with disability at all eligible higher education providers. A smaller funding component reimburses providers for equipment and educational supports for students with disability with high-cost needs.

Providers may use funding for staff training, to better support students with disability, and to modify course content, teaching materials and delivery methods to better meet the needs of students with disability.

Securing Australia’s Mathematical Workforce

The Australian Government is providing $2.5 million over five years (2016 to 2021) to the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) for the Securing Australia’s Mathematical Workforce program.

The project aligns with the National Innovation and Science Agenda, and aims to improve outcomes for higher education students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). It will strengthen research training for STEM graduates in Australia and contribute to a highly skilled mathematical sciences workforce.

Annual project activities for honours, masters and PhD students include:

  • Summer School–short courses on mathematical sciences topics informed by national and industry needs

  • Winter School–supports building of research networks and broadens mathematical sciences technical skills

  • BioInfoSummer symposium in biological sciences and/or mathematical sciences

  • Optimise–a symposium in mathematical optimisation.

Securing Australia’s Mathematical Workforce also supports Vacation Research Scholarships for undergraduate students to undertake mathematical sciences research.

This project builds on the success of the previous AMSI Vacation Schools and Scholarships project (2012-2016).

    Research Block Grants

Research block grants (RBGs) provide funding to eligible Australian higher education providers (HEPs) to support research and research training, and are established under the Higher Education Support Act 2003 (HESA).

RBG funding is allocated on a calendar year basis and calculated using program-specific formulae. Funding is awarded based on the relative performance of each HEP in attracting research income and supporting students to complete higher degrees by research (HDRs).

HEPs have autonomy to allocate RBG funding to support their research students, staff and projects, and to provide for equipment and infrastructure to achieve their research priorities.
